On a typical long-haul destination, a three-day seminar costs five. Two days disappear in travel and recovery. This is rarely said when budgets are decided, yet it accounts for a large share of the real cost of an event.
Between Paris and Dakar, the direct flight takes about five hours twenty. An executive who takes off in late morning has dinner in Dakar the same evening. The time difference is one hour in winter and two in summer — small enough for a working day to remain a working day from the day after arrival.
The three-day seminar costs three and a half.
The figures, in the order you need them
There is a departure every day of the week. For an organiser, this means arrival and departure dates are not dictated by the flight schedule — which is not the case for every destination in West Africa.
What it changes for an executive committee
Take a convention of one hundred people over two nights. On a destination eight hours' flight away with a five-hour time difference, you lose the arrival day and get a sluggish restart on return. In Dakar, an evening arrival allows an opening dinner, and the next morning's plenary takes place with participants who are awake.
This is not a matter of comfort. It is the difference between a working programme and a trip.
The airport misunderstanding
Blaise Diagne International Airport is located in the municipality of Diass, some fifty kilometres from Dakar. Most guides stop there, and readers draw the expected conclusion: it is far away.
Far from what, exactly?
Diamniadio, where most of the country's congress capacity is concentrated, lies on the route between the airport and the capital. A delegate landing for a congress in Diamniadio does not cross Dakar: they stop before it. The transfer takes a quarter of an hour.
The long journey is the tourist's, heading for the Corniche. Not the congress delegate's.
In other words, a congress at the CICAD or in the adjoining hotels gets its participants to their destination faster than a seminar in the city centre.
Why it matters operationally
For a congress of several hundred people, the airport transfer is both a budget line and a risk. Moving three hundred people over fifty kilometres in heavy traffic is not the same operation as over fifteen kilometres of motorway.
Senegal has built its congress hub on the right side of the airport. That is rare, and it is an argument the destination does not use.
Key takeaway
For an event in Diamniadio or on the Petite Côte, the distance from the airport is an advantage, not a constraint. For an event on the Plateau, allow an hour for the transfer and avoid bringing a group in at rush hour.
What is not enough
Accessibility alone does not make an events destination. It takes documented meeting rooms, reachable operators and response times that are kept. That is another subject, and we will come back to it.
But when a buyer opens the list of possible destinations, flight time decides what stays on the screen. Dakar is on it, and few people know it.
